Goodnight Ladies
On Saturday evening
Firstly a trio of youngsters entertained us; James McCullough
on the piano and his little sister Jessica on the bells gave us Jingle Bells,
followed by Rosie Walsh-Kirk singing Walking on the Air from The Snowman in a
clear sweet voice. Rosie then
treated us to a delightful piano composition of her own, a jazzy little number.
The core of the evening was performances by an ensemble of
musicians, playing such diverse instruments as the clarinet(John Higgs),
oboe(Sally Marsh), violin(John McCormick, Donald Milligan), viola(John
Hesselgreaves), cello(Johnny Dowswell), piano(Susan Smith) and guitars(Nicola
Black and Blackie).
The first half of the evening was heavily weighted toward
classical composers, Charpentier, Stamitz, Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Mozart,
leavened with a medley of Gilbert and Sullivan tunes and closing with a new
venture for the intrepid Johns, a Barbershop Quartet - don’t give up the day
job, boys!
After the interval Nicola and Blackie gave us her lovely
Scottish songs, poems by Hugh MacDiarmid set to music by Nicola including The
Bubblyjock, Scunner and the haunting To Christine.
To demonstrate her versatility Nicola sang a wonderful jazz number,
Summertime to warm us on a chilly winter evening, and closed with her own
composition, Simon’s Bay.
More classical music followed, and then the audience were
invited to play a part, singing some golden oldies from Sir Harry Lauder, and
the even older Bird in a Gilded Cage.
We were sung out into the night by the Barbershop with
Goodnight Ladies.
